Essentials for a Reimagined Bathroom

So what’s important when you want to update your bathroom? Whether renovating an existing space or building from scratch, I try to incorporate certain key elements in each bath I design.

Prioritize Natural Light

Natural light transforms a bathroom—brightening the space, enhancing ambiance, and creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection when paired with a great view.

To maintain privacy without blocking light, think:

  • Sheer drapery for a soft, elegant look

  • Light-filtering shades to softly diffuse sunlight

  • Up/down Roman shades for adjustable coverage

Start with A Neutral Palette, Elevate with Texture And Contrast

A neutral foundation keeps a bathroom fresh and timeless. Add depth and movement with:

  • Layered Textures – Think dimensional tiles, textured wallpaper, artisanal plaster, stone, slatted wood, even plants

  • Sculptural Elements – Statement lighting, distinctive hardware, bold furniture, or a showstopping soaking tub in a unique shape or finish

  • Organic & Tactile Details – Carved wood, live edges, natural textiles, river rock, rattan or teak for warmth

  • Intentional Accents – A feature wall, patterned tiles, handcrafted accessories or subtle touches of color

Layer Lighting for Function and Ambiance

While natural light is ideal, artificial lighting plays a crucial role in bathroom design. We always layer lighting to balance function and aesthetics:

  • Task lighting: Essential for vanities and mirrors to ensure proper visibility

  • Ambient lighting: Softens the overall space and enhances relaxation

  • Accent lighting: Toe-kick lighting under vanities, wall sconces, or even ceiling soffit uplights, add a warm, inviting glow

Upgrade Your Hardware for a Fresh Look

Swapping out plumbing fixtures, cabinet handles, and door hardware is a simple, cost-effective way to elevate your bathroom’s look

  • With endless finishes—from polished nickel to aged bronze and brushed gold—there’s something for every style

  • Don’t be afraid to mix metals! Pair polished nickel faucets with matte black or soft gold sconces, or stainless faucets and shower trim with distressed bronze cabinet pulls for a sophisticated, high-end feel

Design for Functionality and Beauty: Consider a Curbless Shower

Curbless showers aren’t just visually compelling—they create a seamless, spa-like ambiance while enhancing functionality for a more accessible and luxurious experience!

  • We typically use the same floor tile, often larger format, throughout the entire bathroom to make the space feel expansive and cohesive

  • Just be mindful of material choices—not all tiles are slip-resistant enough for the shower, so it’s important to choose the right finish!

Don’t Forget the Fifth Wall: The Ceiling

The ceiling is an often-overlooked design element that can add depth, light, and texture to your space. Consider:

  • Vaulted or varied ceiling heights for architectural interest

  • Skylights to bring in additional natural light

  • Exposed beams, wood planks, unique molding or ceiling cladding for added warmth

  • A different paint color or subtle plaster texture to enhance the overall aesthetic

The right balance of beauty and function turns a bathroom into a daily retreat—one that supports your routines and expresses your personal style. Thoughtful design is where that transformation begins, and I love helping clients bring it to life.

If you're ready to reimagine your bath, I’d love to help you design a space that balances utility with beauty—and reflects the way you live.
